I vote Ak’b'al (which represents night and the jaguar god of the underworld) for the cub and Ix Chel for the female — Ix Chel is a female goddess, jaguar deity, in the Mayan culture.

Hola amigos, un gran saludo!!
I suggested Diane and ody, but also I mentioned that names from ancient Gods would be just great for this beautiful big cats. I think that this kind of names (Gods names) will be most accurate to describe this jaguars and ocelots. I feel that all animals are in fact more close to any deity, for their pure soul. The big cats are awesome animals, in all aspects of their lives. They have inspired many poets and artists through time, some ancient cultures saw them as Gods, and surely there is no human being that do not feel that they are something special. Someday my father told me the following words:”Thanks God for this awesome big cats”, refering to jaguars, leopards and cheetahs. He told me that words many time ago, when I was a very little child seeing my first live jaguars and leopards at the zoo. Well, today sometimes I just don´t know if there is a God out there, but when I´m stand in front of this magnifficent creatures…, when I see their absolute perfection and incredible beauty…, and when I feel, in the deepest of my heart, their brave and wild spirits, there is just one single word, in that magic moment, that can came to my mind to describe them…”Amen”…

lol F.J. — we must be on the same wave length as I never saw the previous post…I am a bit embarrassed!
F. J. Pechir on April 10th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
Dear Christine, please don´t! I´m happy to know that you think just like me about this issue!
F.J. you never cease to amaze me! Very eloquently put. But these elusive cats hail from Brazil…I want some South American flair to their names. Some pizazz!!! Something that says, “Hey, look at me, I’m gorgeous”. You know what I mean?
I already got to name a beautiful brown spotted hyena on another blog (Charlie). It’s not fair for me to name another creature! Speaking of creatures, your ocelots are heavier then the ones in our southwest. What’s up with that?

Dear Cristine,
Thank you for that! Think now we have the names!!! Ak’b’al and Ix Chel! Do you have any suggestion for the ocelots?

Olá Mr. Pechir,
Your passion is inspiration to all us here and for all our friends that came to visit the blog here. Reading your memories with your father it also bring mine very first experience at the zoo, I just remember it because of the impact oh that in my young mind. I use to be – and still a little – almost autistic and liked only to play alone with insects and plants and more concerned on animals than any other stuff. At that time my father brings me and my sister to a small zoo. We were travelling and we did it in an interval of few hours between a bus and another. All I remember of that is a jaguar in a small cage walking from one side to another again and again, again and again. That stereotyped behavior, those empty eyes impressed me in a way that I can not describe. Here I use the words that Dr. Ethan Powell (Anthony Hopkins) said on captive gorillas in the movie Instinct (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instinct_%28film%29): That was not a jaguar, that was just an empty shell… But despite of that those eyes, in some manner, could transmit the feline spirit of wild and freedom, fear and respect. I need to confess that is weird to recovery these almost hidden memories, but I do feel when reading all this passionate comments that it is almost to talk with closest friends. Thank you all dearest catlovers, from remember us that we are not alone.

IN TIME:
Theresa,
I never find anything on significant weight differences between the subspecies. Where did you hear that? I will search for information.
